- October 20 12:00-1:00PM
- October 21 6:00-7:00PM
- October 22 9:00-10:00AM
All meetings will be held at Decorah Municipal Building - 400 Claiborne Drive, Decorah
What will the project include?
- Expanded apparatus bay to store all the fire department’s vehicles (engines, trucks, ATV, boats) in one location
- A decontamination zone to provide a separate space for gear and equipment upon return from calls
- Increased tool and maintenance storage, allowing staff to better maintain department fleet and make needed repairs/upgrades
- A hose tower, allowing hoses to drain and properly dry after each use, prolonging hose life. The tower also provides a training site for staff.
- Training/command center room to create needed space for meetings, department trainings, and to serve as a central communication room during incident response
- Office area to provide needed staff space for report completion, investigation, planning, and other administrative tasks
- Increased storage for equipment, supplies, and records
- Essential living quarters for on-call fire department personnel
- Public restrooms
- Code-compliant City storm shelter
Please note: The City is committed to finding the most cost-effective option for meeting the space and accessibility needs of both the Parks and Recreation Department and Administration. Options currently being explored include renovating the existing city hall space, building new space in conjunction with the new fire station, or renovating the BMO bank in downtown Decorah.
- Expanded public meeting space and conference room
- Improved audio/visual capabilities for public meetings
- ADA accessible City Council Chambers
- Updated ADA accessible restrooms
- Efficient office space that meets the needs of the City administration and Parks and Recreation Department
- Equipment storage
- Public Service Counter for city business and customer service
- Improved document and records storage to eliminate off-site rented facilities
- Efficient building systems and finishes to save on facility maintenance and utility costs
Why is there a need to update/expand these city facilities?
A Facility and Site Program Assessment identified the following key needs:
- The building’s roof requires complete replacement.
- The saw-tooth concrete roof structure is failing due to water damage.
- The building’s exterior brick and stone paneling is failing due to moisture damage.
- The major building systems (ventilation and air conditioning, electrical, and thermal controls) are failing and not operating efficiently.
- The building does not have restrooms that meet current American with Disabilities Act (ADA) code.
- The interior finishes, casework and lighting are old, breaking, and no longer meet current needs.
- The foundation in the apparatus bay where the fire trucks are housed, is failing and sinking as a result of the soil being washed away, the result of foundation design in original construction.
- Meeting and collaboration space is inadequate to meet the needs of City employees and government committees.
- Limited and scattered office space creates inefficiencies.
- There is a lack of private and secure office space for fire department staff to complete investigations and paperwork.
- The apparatus bay is too small, forcing some vehicles and equipment to be stored off-site, and fire trucks to be too close to one another.
- The fire department lacks the storage needed for equipment and tools.
- Critical fire safety needs are lacking, including a separate space for post-call equipment decontamination and storage. This is a critical safety need as equipment is contaminated with carcinogenic contaminants during a fire response.
- The fire department lacks private sleeping rooms.
- The Council Chambers and other building spaces are not ADA accessible and lack proper security features.
- The site configuration lacks safe and efficient vehicle flow during emergency responses.
- The site lacks adequate parking.
- There is a lack of storage and work space for all city employees. This results in inefficiencies and challenging work environment.
