The City of Decorah Street Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Street Operator. Minimum qualifications include high school diploma or equivalent. Valid driver’s license with Class B CDL and airbrake endorsement (must obtain within one month of hire). Minimum of one year of experience in maintenance, construction, repair work, or related occupation. Familiarity with maps, engineering plans, blueprints and utility markings. Position is subject to post-offer physical examination including drug testing, background and motor vehicle records check. Starting pay is dependent on qualifications and experience. Job Title:              Street Operator I

FLSA Status:        Non-Exempt

Job Status:           Fulltime/Heavy Duty – reports to Street Superintendent

Essential Duties Required:

  • Bring awareness to the Street Superintendent of the need for city street repair and
  • Assist in maintaining all department vehicles and
  • Assist in maintaining necessary record keeping functions related to the street
  • Responsible for welding and cutting of

Additional Duties Required:

  • Assist with maintaining the yard waste disposal
  • General construction and
  • Mowing grass, snow and ice removal, culvert installation, storm sewer maintenance, painting highway and street lines, sidewalk replacement, barricading streets, replacing old and missing signage, sanding and salting of city roads, maintenance of flood control dike and its storm sewer outlets, street sweeping any other duties which are the street departments
  • Plus, any additional services assigned to the street

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required:

  • Must have good communication skills, and ability to maintain good working relations with the public and other city
  • Have a working knowledge of how to fully operate the following types of heavy machinery:
    • Street sweeper
    • Snowplow
    • End loader
    • Roadside mower
    • Snow blower
    • Plus, other related machinery

Qualifications:

  • Must have valid drivers’ license with Class B CDL and airbrake
  • High school graduate or
  • Minimum of one (1) year in experience in maintenance, construction, repair work, or related occupation.
  • Familiarity with maps, engineering plans, blueprints and utility

Work Environment:

  • Ability and willingness to work in extreme conditions (i.e. hot and cold temperatures, wind, rain, dirt, smoke, dust, indoors and outdoors).
  • Must be in good physical condition, able to lift a minimum of 100
  • Willingness to work long hours during emergency situations and extreme conditions. Work may begin as early as 2:00 a.m. and last as long as 12-15
  • Position subject to on-call status during emergency weather situations
  • Ability to report for work within 30 minutes when notified of on-call status
  • Limited contact with chemicals (i.e. insecticides, pesticides, chlorine) and other related
  • Job may tend to be physically
