Decorah, IA (January 13, 2026) – Decorah, IA – The City of Decorah joins communities across Iowa in mourning the loss of Staff Sergeant Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar of Des Moines and Staff Sergeant William “Nate” Howard of Marshalltown, who were killed in action while serving in Palmyra, Syria. Both soldiers were members of the Iowa Army National Guard’s 1-113th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division.

“On behalf of the City of Decorah, I extend our heartfelt sympathy to the families, friends, and fellow service members of SSG Torres-Tovar and SSG Howard,” said Andy Carlson, Mayor of Decorah. “Their courage, service, and sacrifice in defense of our nation will never be forgotten.”

To honor their lives and service, Mayor Carlson will sign a proclamation designating January 13, 2026, as SSG Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar Day and SSG William “Nate” Howard Day in the City of Decorah.

The City also extends its deepest gratitude to our local soldiers, including those who have served or are currently serving in the Iowa Army National Guard, as well as all members of the United States Armed Forces. Their commitment and bravery safeguard the freedoms we cherish.

Decorah stands united in remembrance and respect, honoring the fallen, supporting their families, and recognizing the service of all who wear the uniform.
