For Immediate Release

Decorah, IA – The Decorah Water Department will begin its routine fall hydrant flushing program on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Crews will work across the city weekdays from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The maintenance project will take approximately two to three weeks to complete.

Hydrant flushing is a vital maintenance practice. It clears natural sediment from the water mains, ensures high water quality, and verifies that all fire hydrants operate properly for emergency fire protection.

What Residents Should Expect:

  • Pressure Drops: Residents may experience temporary, slight drops in water pressure.
  • Discoloration: Water may briefly appear discolored or rusty due to loose sediment.
  • Safety: The water remains safe and chemically treated throughout the process.

Recommended Actions for Residents:

  • Check Water: Run cold water taps for 1-2 minutes until clear before cooking or drinking.
  • Laundry Caution: Check the water color before doing laundry to prevent clothing stains.
  • Appliances: Avoid running water softeners or washing machines while crews are flushing nearby.

The Decorah Water Department appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation during these necessary infrastructure improvements.
