Heivly Street Initial Phase Traffic Control

Decorah, IA (May 15, 2025) – The City of Decorah is notifying residents of upcoming street closures related to the initial phase of construction on the Decorah 2025 Heivly Street Improvements project.

Work during the week of May 19th will involve installation of water mains near City Hall.  Claiborne Drive will be closed north of the River/Heivly/Claiborne intersection at that time.  The 48-hour parking lot will be closed to thru traffic for safety reasons.  Recycle bins will remain accessible.  Access to Claiborne Drive west of the High School & John Cline Elementary will be via N. Mill Street and Goose Island Drive.

Eastbound – Westbound traffic on Heivly Street will remain open as much as possible during the initial phase of construction but will close for several days while crews install mains and a fire hydrant east of the intersection.  Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes when Road Closed Ahead signs are posted at the State/Heivly intersection.

Driveway entrances and exits to the Post Office and BMO bank drive-thru will not be affected during spring construction.

After water main work is complete, the River/Heivly/Claibore intersection will reopen and Skyline Construction will install large-diameter storm sewer from the high school pond, across Goose Island Drive and along the north side of Claiborne Drive.

Work on the initial phase of construction is expected to last 2-3 weeks.

An aerial photo of Heivly Street marked with traffic control notes is available for public release.

Construction updates will continue throughout the course of the project.

Please contact the City Engineer at 563-277-5155 with questions.
