City of Decorah Launches Public Parklet Program

Decorah, IA (August 21, 2024) – The City of Decorah is excited to announce the launch of its new Public Parklet Program, designed to enhance public spaces and provide additional seating areas for everyone to enjoy. This innovative initiative is a collaborative effort made possible by the Decorah Self-Supporting Municipal Improvement District (SSMID) Board, Decorah Downtown Betterment Association, and the Decorah Area Chamber of Commerce.

The City received several inquiries from businesses interested in participating in the program and received four applications for consideration. The enthusiasm from the community highlights the positive impact this program is expected to have on the downtown area.

The first parklets are located in front of Blazing Star and Sugar Bowl, two beloved local businesses. While these businesses have generously agreed to help maintain the cleanliness of the parklets, it’s important to note that the parklets are open to the public and are not restricted to the customers of these establishments. Everyone is welcome to use these spaces for relaxation, socializing, or simply enjoying the downtown atmosphere.

To celebrate the launch, a ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at the parklet in front of Blazing Star on Friday, September 6th, at 9:00 AM. Community members, local businesses, and city officials are encouraged to attend and be part of this exciting new chapter in Decorah’s commitment to enhancing public spaces.
