RCT Sewer & Vac – Cleaning and Sewer Main line Notice

Posted: April 9, 2026 in City News

Dear Community Members,

City of Decorah, IA residents we will be doing the annual City Sewer main line cleaning starting 4/9/2026. If you see out truck on your street, please be aware that you may get gurgling in your toilet. Please be advised to keep your toilet lids closed to prevent water from bubbling out. We do our best to not disturb your day-to-day routine; however, situations arise that may leave signs we were in the neighborhood.

Overview: In collaboration with the city, we will be doing sewer line cleaning/maintenance on your street. This work is done to make sure that the Sewer main line in the street continues to work as designed. This letter is to inform you of that work and provide the answers to some frequently asked questions.

What will be occurring?

We will be working around the sewer manholes in the street. We run a hose with a water spraying nozzle on the end to clean and remove grit, sand and other foreign material from the sewer main line. This nozzle can have pressure up to 2,000 PSI inside the sewer main line. The truck in the street also has vacuum on it and we vacuum the debris out of the sewer line. General cleaning is relatively quick with two passes up and down the line taking about 15 minutes in front of your home. Occasionally we run into areas where there are roots and other obstructions in the line that require more aggressive cleaning and longer time periods in the area.
