Smith Hospital Building to be considered for National Register

Decorah, IA (Dec. 20, 2022) — The Decorah Historic Preservation Commission will on
December 28 evaluate the Smith Memorial Hospital Building for the National Register of
Historic Places. The meeting will be at 4:30 pm in the Decorah City Council Chambers. The
public is invited to attend.

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation’s historic places
worthy of preservation. Designation involves local, state, and federal evaluation. The Smith
Building nomination was coordinated by the Winneshiek County Historic Preservation Commission
and was prepared by professional consultants Rebecca Conrad and Jan Olive Full. The building is
nominated for its historic associations and its architecture. The 1914 building was designed
by E. Turnock Hill. The 1930, 1947, 1955, and 1961 additions were designed by the Charles
Altfillisch firm.
