Freeport Bowstring Bridge

Freeport Bowstring Bridge
NRHP 1984 (delisted 2008)

The Freeport Bowstring Bridge was installed in 1878. At that time it had the longest span of any Winneshiek County bridge, and when it was nominated for the National Register in 1984 it was said to be the second-longest single-span U.S. bowstring bridge still in use. It was removed from the National Register after it was in 1989 transferred to its current site in an Iowa Department of Natural Resources park between Decorah and Freeport.

In 2025 the Decorah Historic Preservation Commission developed an informational sign installed near the bridge’s current location. The sign content is viewable here. The Historic American Engineering Record report (HAER Iowa-19) provides helpful background. The June 30, 2026 dedication of the bridge's informational sign was covered in this Decorah News article.
