Painter-Bernatz Mill

The oldest portion of the stone mill was constructed in 1851 and is therefore probably the oldest existing building in Decorah. The Mill was given to the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum in 1968 and forms a central part of the Museum’s outdoors exhibits. The Mill was described in Iowa SI-96-014 and more fully in Winneshiek County Stone Structures (Winneshiek County Historic Preservation Commission, booklet and supplementary on-line materials, 2021).
