The John Cline elementary school is one of the many low-lying, easy-accessibility schools that Altfillisch designed throughout the Upper Midwest in the 1950s and early 1960s. The central visual exterior element is the gymnasium roof that rises above the rest of the building. There are three entrances to the building that lead to separate hallways with classrooms off of each hallway. Given the building’s lack of air conditioning and other concerns, there has in recent years been considerable discussion in Decorah of demolishing this building and constructing a new school.
