Tudor Cottage

This home’s steeply pitched gable roofs, the long cat-slide roof along the left, and the window grouping on the front facade are characteristics of a Tudor Cottage. The garage in the rear is clearly a later addition, and the underground garage may be as well, although Altfillisch included a below-patio garage in the 1922 Leytze house at 704 W. Water, and evidently in the 1936 Hoffman house at 803 Day St.

The house was built in 1936 for L. O. (Ollie) and Mary (Updegraff) Reed. Mary Reed, a member of the Western Bridge Association, wrote a weekly column in the Decorah Journal in 1934 entitled “Paving the Way to Better Bridge,” and was the local contract bridge teacher of the Culbertson system. She was also director of regular Friday night bridge tournaments held in 1934-5 at Hotel Winneshiek and other locations.
