The Fred Carlson Company built this duplex to demonstrate a new type of permanent and maintenance-free construction using concrete. Walls are 8-inch concrete masonry units manufactured by the company. The main floor is a reinforced concrete slab designed for fire resistance and durability. Altfillisch’s modern design emphasized the building’s horizontal lines with large windows, and massive chimneys and attached garages at each end. Untypical of most pure International Style buildings, the roofline is slightly elaborated, in this instance with Art Deco style chevrons. The roofs of the garages are also sun porches. Each of the two identical apartments has a full basement, a main floor with kitchen, living and dining rooms, and a second story with three bedrooms and a bathroom.
