This was the Decorah Journal newspaper’s “Model Home of 1938,” designed by Altfillisch with Albert Hendrickson as contractor. The home was heavily advertised as it was built (“Watch it Grow!”). Local contractors and businesses finished and furnished the inside. It was open to the public Nov. 12-13, 1938, when over 1,000 people toured it. It was purchased by Justin Hammond, who with his father were publishers of the Decorah Journal at the time. Justin Hammond had that summer been married to Louisa Mairs. The clearest images of the home while under construction (DJ 8/9/1938, p. 5 and 8/16/1938, p. 5) show the distinctive dormers. The two more modern photos above show the house before and after addition of a long front porch and extension of the roof to cover the porch.
