City of Decorah Announces Tree Inventory Initiative

Decorah, IA (December 4, 2024) – The City of Decorah is pleased to announce that, with funding in part by an Urban and Community Forestry grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service and the Arbor Day Foundation, it has hired Eocene Environmental Group to conduct a comprehensive tree inventory of the trees located on boulevards and select parks throughout the city.

Residents can expect to see Eocene Environmental Group crews in the community over the next month and extending into January, gathering valuable data on trees across Decorah’s boulevards and parks. This project will provide the city with detailed information on the health, species, size, and location of each tree, helping to better manage the city’s urban forest.

This tree inventory will provide us with a wealth of information that will guide future tree care, planning, and growth in the city.

Top Benefits of a Tree Inventory:
1. Improved Urban Forest Management: A tree inventory allows the city to track the health, condition, and species of trees, ensuring that they are maintained and replaced as needed.
2. Enhanced Public Safety: By identifying trees that may pose a risk due to disease, damage, or age, the inventory helps prioritize safety measures, such as pruning or removal, to protect residents and property.
3. Better Planning for Future Tree Planting: The data gathered will inform future tree planting efforts, allowing the city to select appropriate species for specific locations, helping to create a more diverse and resilient urban forest.
4. Increased Environmental Benefits: With detailed data, the city can calculate and improve the ecological services provided by the urban forest, such as air and water purification, energy savings, and carbon sequestration.
5. Attracting Grants and Funding: A well-maintained tree inventory can enhance the city’s eligibility for future funding and grants to support additional environmental projects, maintenance, and tree planting efforts.
